Detroit Lions Star Kerby Joseph Re-Signs with Team, Rejects.....
April 29, 2025

In a move that has electrified Lions fans, All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph has signed a four-year, $86 million contract extension with the Detroit Lions, making him the highest-paid safety in NFL history. The deal, finalized last week, comes with a surprising twist: Joseph turned down a higher offer from the Miami Dolphins, reportedly worth $92 million over four years, to stay with the team that drafted him.

Joseph, a third-round pick in 2022, has been a cornerstone of Detroit’s defense, leading the NFL with nine interceptions in 2024 and amassing 17 picks in his first three seasons. His standout performance earned him First-Team All-Pro honors, solidifying his status as one of the league’s elite defensive backs. Despite interest from multiple teams, including a more lucrative proposal from Miami, Joseph chose loyalty to the Lions and their passionate fanbase.

“I’m a Lion for life,” Joseph said at a press conference at Ford Field. “This city, this team, these fans—they’ve believed in me since day one. Money’s great, but building something special here in Detroit means more. We’re not done yet.”

Lions general manager Brad Holmes praised Joseph’s decision, emphasizing his role in the team’s ongoing success. “Kerby’s a special player and an even better person. His commitment to this team speaks volumes about the culture we’re building,” Holmes said. The extension ensures Joseph remains with Detroit through the 2029 season, anchoring a secondary that helped the Lions win 15 games in 2024.

Sources close to the negotiations revealed that Miami’s offer included a higher annual average value and additional incentives, but Joseph prioritized staying with a Lions team poised for a Super Bowl run. The Dolphins, seeking to bolster their secondary after losing safety Ifeatu Melifonwu to free agency, made a strong push for Joseph but couldn’t sway him.

Head coach Dan Campbell called Joseph’s decision “a testament to what we’re about.” He added, “Kerby’s a dog, a playmaker, and a leader. He’s all-in for Detroit, and that’s why we’re building something historic here.”

The news comes as the Lions prepare for the 2025 season, with high expectations following their NFC Championship appearance last year. Joseph’s re-signing, alongside ongoing talks to extend edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, signals Detroit’s commitment to locking up its young core.

Fans took to social media to celebrate, with #LionsPride trending on X. “Kerby choosing Detroit over more money? That’s my guy!” one fan posted. Another wrote, “This is why the Lions are different now. Culture over cash.”

As the Lions gear up for their next game at Ford Field, Joseph’s decision has injected even more excitement into a city hungry for its first Super Bowl. For now, the Motor City can rest easy knowing one of its brightest stars is staying home
