Knight became the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers in 1971, succeeding Lou Watson. Over the next 29 years, he transformed the program into a powerhouse, securing three NCAA championships in 1976, 1980, and 1983. His 1976 team remains the last in NCAA Division I men’s basketball to complete a season undefeated.

Known for his intense coaching style and defensive strategies, Knight was a disciplinarian who demanded excellence from his players. His approach led to numerous accolades, including 11 Big Ten Conference titles and 11 Final Four appearances.
