BILOXI, Mississippi — It was 67 years ago Johnny Mathis received the phone call that would change his life — and the course of popular music history — forever.
A 19-year-old track & field star at the San Francisco State College, Mathis was also an aspiring vocalist, singing in choirs and shows around the Bay Area, where he and his family resided.
His skill in the high jump earned him an invitation to the 1956 U.S. Olympic Trials, but that same week, Columbia Records called, heeding the advice of George , the company’s head of popular music who had seen Mathis perform live, and offered the young singer his first recording contract.
