Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of options at cornerback. Levi Wallace, James Pierre, and Chandon Sullivan are free agents who have either signed elsewhere or remain on the market. Meanwhile, Patrick Peterson will need to make an important decision about his next destination. But Sullivan may be the most intriguing player of the group just because of how strong he emerged at the end of the season. He did not play much, but when he was called to play more because of Peterson’s switch to safety, he performed admirably.
In an interview with Ron Lippock, Sullivan detailed his parting conversation with the team, during which they expressed their desire to do business with him.
“I felt like I made the most of the possibilities I had. I didn’t play as many snaps as I usually do, but that’s how it turned out schematically. But I took advantage of the opportunities I got on defence and special teams,” Sullivan explained. “I hadn’t played much on special teams before, but I believe I performed well there. The staff informed me before I left that they would like to conduct more business with me, but who knows. We understand how lucrative the NFL can be. But do not worry.
In 2023, the Steelers utilised Peterson as a slot receiver, outside cornerback, and safety. Peterson shifted to safety to help deal with the position’s high injury rate. Now healthy, the Steelers have many safeties under contract for 2024, with Minkah Fitzpatrick, Damontae Kazee, and Joey Porter Jr. all expected to return. However, Sullivan could be a fascinating character to bring back. He was a core special teamer who, while playing only around 15 snaps per game, provided Pittsburgh with some underneath aggression when needed.
