Former Detroit Lions player Cameron Sutton turned himself in to Florida police on domestic abuse charges, more than three weeks after an arrest warrant was issued.

ESPN said that the warrant was issued on March 7 and that police solicited the public for assistance in locating Sutton on March 20.

On Sunday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) in Tampa said that Sutton, 29, had been arrested.

Sutton is accused with domestic battery by strangulation.

The Lions released the defensive back, external, on March 21 following the police appeal.

His counsel stated that his client intended to surrender to police in Tampa on March 25th, but he did not arrive at Orient Road Jail until 8:24pm local time on Sunday, according to the HSCO statement.

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

“Domestic abuse is not tolerated in our community, and no one is above the law in Hillsborough County. My sympathies are with this woman as she recovers from this man’s horrific crimes.”

Domestic battery by strangling is a third-degree offence punishable by up to five years in jail.

In 2023, the Lions signed Sutton from the Pittsburgh Steelers to a three-year contract worth $33 million (£26.1 million), and he started all 17 regular-season games and three playoff games last season.
