When the Golden State Warriors hired Steve Kerr as head coach in 2014, he had already won five NBA championships as a player. Since then, he has added four more coaching positions. With his latest contract extension, it appears that his remuneration in the Bay Area is finally commensurate with his performance.

According to sources, Golden State’s head coach, Steve Kerr, now gets $17.5 million per year. To be clear, Kerr signed a two-year contract in February, making him the league’s highest-paid coach. While the Warriors did not divulge the financial parameters of the contract, it is evident that the Dubs intend to retain Kerr’s services for the foreseeable future. If we are honest, why wouldn’t they? At 58 years old, Kerr has led the Warriors through ten seasons and won four championships.

Of course, Kerr’s compensation is not as high as that of his star player. Stephen Curry, regarded as the greatest shooter in NBA history, agreed to a $215 million, four-year contract deal in 2021 that will last through the 2025-2026 season. To that end, the Warriors’ point guard is scheduled to earn $51.9 million for the 2023-2024 season. Not bad for one day’s labour.

Kerr is presently sixth on the list of coaches with the most championships, trailing Phil Jackson with 11, Red Auerbach with 9, and John Kundia, Pat Riley, and Gregg Popovich, who are tied with five titles each. Can he add to the tally? Given the Warriors’ current record of 36-34, which ranks 10th in the Western Conference, one may reply, ‘Not this season.’ On the other hand, the team remains in strong contention for the playoffs. Who knows what might happen next?
