That’s not to imply Ann Arbor’s cabinets are bare. The reverse is true, according to Johnson, who has witnessed exceptional practice effort from players such as DJ Waller, Jyaire Hill, Ja’Den McBurrows, Zeke Berry, and Kody Jones in particular.

“All those guys have stepped up a lot,” Johnson explained. “So, they are taking the following move for the upcoming year. So, just keep stacking days during spring ball and improving each day. “We’ll be ready for the season.”

With Mike Sainristil entering the NFL Draft, Moore’s knee injury, and safety Keon Sabb transferring to Alabama, the University of Michigan secondary could provide plenty of opportunities for Waller, Hill, McBurrows, Berry, and Jones.

Brad Holmes sold the team’s third-round pick for Carlton Davis, regarded as one of the best man coverage cornerbacks in the league. Dan Campbell couldn’t be happier to have him on the roster.

“There are things he can do to take his side of the field away at times, and having some of that, man, goes a long way for the rest of the defence, as well as what (Aaron Glenn) will be able to call. That’s going to help. And that’s something we’ve been missing since we arrived.”

However, the ability to play man has an impact in more than one area. The entire defence benefits, particularly the safety team. Last year’s safeties provided important run support. They have fewer tasks and can focus on a single duty every play thanks to greater man coverage. Campbell went on to explain why it is important.

“Being able to play man is the same as being able to sprint or stop the football. Being a good teammate is one of our key beliefs. You want to be able to play guy when necessary. So, yes, I believe this will offer AG (Aaron Glen) greater choice in deciding what to call.
