On Wednesday, the New Orleans Saints announced the re-signing of veteran safety Johnathan Abram. This comes just one day after the team re-signed S. Ugo Amadi.

New Orleans released S. Marcus Maye shortly before the start of free agency. They also lost backup defensive back Lonnie Johnson, who signed with the Houston Texans. Amadi and Abram will join safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Howden on the back end of the defence.

The Oakland Raiders originally selected Abram, 27, in the first round out of Mississippi State in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent his first four seasons with the Raiders, intercepting three passes and breaking up fifteen others. He made 207 total tackles, including nine for loss and 125 solo.

The Raiders released Abram in the middle of the 2022 season. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers and appeared in three games before joining the Seattle Seahawks for the final six games.

Last summer, New Orleans signed Abram as a free agent. Abram, best known as an in-the-box safety, played 35% of the defensive snaps in nine games with the team, starting three of them.

Abram intercepted a single pass for the Saints in 2023. He made 26 total tackles, one for loss and 12 unassisted stops. Last season, New Orleans placed 10th in pass defence. They ranked 13th in total defence and 8th in points allowed.
