San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan speaks to the media after practice at training camp in Santa Clara, Calif., on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

On Thursday, the Arizona Cardinals dismissed defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight.

This name may not mean much to those unfamiliar with the 49ers’ offseason rosters or practice squad, but Knight has been a popular name at camp for San Francisco since he was signed as an undrafted rookie after the 2022 draft. He was released as part of the 49ers’ final roster cuts last offseason, and the Cardinals stepped in to sign him. Knight is now available after being released from Arizona, and the 49ers should look to re-sign him.

Last season, Knight made his Cardinals debut and played in six games, largely on special teams. It’s not as if bringing him in will cure all of the 49ers’ problems, but he does provide some safety/cornerback versatility, which may give San Francisco some alternatives this offseason. He’s also able to contribute on special teams.

While other secondary arrivals will make a bigger impact than Knight, it would be worthwhile for the 49ers to bring him back and give him another chance to contribute. If he can contribute, it would be a significant lift for a secondary that is in dire need of quality depth. If he can’t, it’s a low-risk addition with little substantial consequences for San.
