CALGARY — Canada’s men’s world hockey team will be led by Rick Nash. Hockey Canada selected the two-time Olympic gold winner and former NHL player general manager on Tuesday for the competition, which takes place in Czechia from May 10–26. At the 2022 event, the 39-year-old from Brampton, Ontario, assisted the general manager as the Canadians won silver. After serving as the general manager’s special assistant for two seasons, Nash, who announced his retirement from the game in 2019, is currently in his third season as the Columbus Blue Jackets’ director of player development.
After being selected by the national programme last week to choose the nation’s NHL team for the 2026 Olympics, Nash received the go-ahead from Hockey Canada executive Scott Salmond, former Anaheim Ducks captain and player relations adviser Ryan Getzlaf, and general manager of the St. Louis Blues Doug Armstrong.
In a statement, Armstrong praised Nash, saying, “He brings a wealth of international and NHL experience from his playing career and his time as an executive.”
