Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers’ star edge rusher, has dominated the NFL since he first stepped on the field. His performance and honors are impressive considering he has not always faced a dominant opponent. That did not prevent Bosa from winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

In 2023, Bosa maintained his typical level of productivity. When your down year totals 10.5 sacks, you know you’ve set a high standard. According to Sports Info Solutions, Bosa finished fourth in total pressures and second in quarterback hits. But we’re approaching another offseason with questions about who will play opposite Bosa. Nick and Chase Young were former college teammates who appeared to be quite close. He is an option, although it may be on a trial basis.

Earlier this week, we addressed the 49ers’ potential big moves in free agency. So how about another Bosa? Daniel Popper of The Athletic, who covers the Los Angeles Chargers, appeared on 95.7 The Game and was questioned about Joey Bosa joining his brother Nick. The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft may not cost as much as one may expect, but there’s a reason behind it. Joey, who turns 29 in July, has started nine games over the last two seasons.

Joey has suffered hamstring strains, various concussions, foot bruising, and a groin rupture during his NFL career. He missed the final three games of the 2023 season due to a foot ailment and had hamstring troubles earlier in the season. It would be a buy-low area for a player with a large contract. According to Over the Cap, the Chargers would face more over $21 million in dead money with a post-June 1 designation. Without that categorization, the figure jumps to $28 million in lost money.

What a story it would be if Jim Harbaugh’s first major transaction as a head coach was a trade with the 49ers. Perhaps Harbaugh wants to start over, which could lead to dealing with Bosa.

A deal could work, but Paraag Marathe and the front staff would have to be inventive in determining the dead money, a potential new contract, and everything else linked to the cap.
