Pittsburgh — Steven Nelson, a former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback, is still upset about the team’s decision to release him some years ago. Looking back on his final days in Pittsburgh, the new Houston Texan was unreservedly critical of how everything went down.
During an episode of his own podcast The Corner Suite, Nelson described receiving a phone call from Mike Tomlin informing him that the team was moving on without him.
“My cap number is high coming into my final year,” Nelson remarked. “These motherfuckers felt the need to phone me during the summer, most likely one day before free agency. [Mike Tomlin] called me on some s***. ‘Hey Steve, I believe upstairs they’re looking to swap you. I am like, man, get the [explicit] out of here. You do not think. “You know something.”
Since his release, the Steelers have moved about the cornerback market, looking for long-term options. With Joey Porter Jr. looking great in his rookie year, it appears they’ve finally found one, but Nelson has since taken the league by storm, recording six interceptions, four of which came this season.
“Have a good laugh. Since I departed, they haven’t found a corner. They are still searching. “They’re looking everywhere for mother******s,” Nelson said.
Nelson is poised to enter free agency this spring, but the Steelers are unlikely to make a play for him. And, given his statements, it’s unlikely he’ll be on their list of viable candidates, let alone consider returning to Pittsburgh.
