It’s probably safe to say that Hubert Davis, upon formally accepting the position of head coach of the UNC basketball program back on April 5, 2021, had no idea what he was getting into.
In addition to being chosen to succeed the illustrious Roy Williams, he would also have to guide his cherished program through some of the most radical transformations ever seen by collegiate athletics.
Not having to deal with the wild transfer portal or the Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) world were people like Roy Williams, Bill Guthridge, and Dean Smith.
Naturally, nobody is interested in the myriad of issues that head coaches face; the coach’s track record is the only thing that counts. With 100 games under his belt, Davis is doing rather well in that regard.
In his 100 games as the head coach of the UNC basketball team, Davis has guided the Tar Heels to a 71-29 record. In contrast, Roy Williams, who had previously coached in major league football, led the Tar Heels to 77 victories in his first 100 games, while Bill Guthridge led the Tar Heels to 75 victories.
Despite the fact that many have called for his resignation during his brief time with the team, Davis’s numbers are undeniable: he is on par with a number of very prominent former UNC basketball coaches.
College basketball has undergone a significant transformation, and Davis has not only had to learn how to lead a team—something he had never done before—but also how to handle all the extra responsibilities that come with the position.
Davis has led the UNC basketball program well so far, and if the first 100 games of this period teach us anything, it’s that he’s definitely headed in the right direction for future success.
