The Georgia Bulldogs have been one of the most successful college football programs in recent years, having won the national championship in two of the last three seasons. Success frequently results in turnover, as is the case with Kirby Smart’s crew. Dell McGee, the Bulldogs’ running backs coach, left this offseason to become the head coach at Georgia Southern. McGee was one of Georgia’s most successful recruiters after joining Smart’s inaugural team in 2016.
In the last eight years, McGee has been the key recruiter for nine five-star athletes. According to 247Sports, McGee is the top-10 recruiter for the 2025 cycle. How will McGee’s absence influence Georgia’s football recruitment efforts going forward? Thomas Blackshear, an in-state wide receiver, is one prospect in the 2025 class who Smart’s staff is interested in. He concluded his sophomore season as the second-leading receiver for Benedictine, who went 13-2 and won the Peach State AAAA Championship. He ended the season with 41 receptions for 641 yards and ten touchdowns.
The 6-foot-1, 197-pound receiver transferred to Savannah Calvary Day prior of his junior season and will be the primary pass catcher for a squad that finished 13-1 last season. Blackshear’s outstanding second season drew interest from a number of major colleges, but he’s restricted his options dramatically. A month after naming Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida State as his top three institutions, Blackshear has reduced that list to two. “I have a top two.” Florida State is no longer really in it. “It’s Georgia and Tennessee,” Blackshear informed Dawgs247. “That’s really my top two right now.” For more information, visit Dawgs247.
