In Week 13 of the 2023 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles squared off after almost a decade of buildup.

Both teams were looking for major wins, therefore the game was crucial to their hopes of making the playoffs. Philadelphia, who had an incredible 10-1 record, wanted to guarantee themselves the top seed in the NFC. San Francisco, with a record of 8-3, attempted to close the gap in the NFC championship competition.

The Eagles were completely destroyed by the Niners in a decisive 42-19 victory at Lincoln Financial Field. This victory meant more to San Francisco since it was a time of atonement after the heartache of their early 2022 season exit.
In the end, the Niners secured the top seed in the NFC, which helped them qualify for the Super Bowl once more.

Dramatic as the game was, it came to a head when 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw and Eagles director of security Dom DiSandro got into a sideline fight. Both players were sent off the field as a result of this altercation, and DiSandro was suspended by the league for the balance of the regular season.

After losing to the Niners, the Eagles went on a losing streak from which they were unable to emerge. The club faltered despite Head Coach Nick Sirianni’s best efforts, dropping five of their final six games to end the regular season in a disastrous fashion.

In order to keep the team cohesive during games, DiSandro was renowned for his ability to control Sirianni’s emotions. During pivotal moments on the pitch, Sirianni became entangled in several arguments with players and coaching staff while he was away.

Eagles kicker Jake Elliott and linebacker Nakobe Dean both emphasized DiSandro’s crucial role on the club, calling him a “do-it-all guy” and a “fix-it” guy, respectively.

DiSandro’s presence did not turn around the Eagles’ situation after his return from suspension; instead, the team lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card game, 32-9.

Although Sirianni’s emotional coaching approach has been a defining feature of his tenure, it’s hard to conclude that the Eagles’ shocking collapse was caused exclusively by the head coach’s lack of emotional self-control.
