After the 2023 season, Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, was a strong contender for one of the head coaching vacancies.

The Washington Commanders were one of the openings that some thought may be a good fit for the offensive brain because of their draft capital and cap room.

The 37-year-old might have had trouble adjusting to the new ownership group in charge of the Commanders, according to ESPN.

Jenna Laine wrote on social media, “Heard that Commanders ownership “turned off” Ben Johnson because they’re “basketball men” and felt they were a little too certain of their football opinions.” “I’ve also heard that he wasn’t a good interviewee.” He stated, “Yet it’s evident that the two sides are not a good fit.”

Reportedly attempting to arrange a flight to Detroit, Johnson unexpectedly told Washington officials he wanted to stay in Detroit.

Several players have talked about feeling like there’s “unfinished business” following the team’s NFC Championship Game loss to the 49ers.

Johnson has a close relationship with head coach Dan Campbell in Detroit.

Johnson might feel more comfortable accepting a head coaching role in 2025 if he has the chance to work one more season in Motown.

In contrast to numerous other coaches on the team, Johnson was not an NFL football player.

Detroit is among the most prolific offences in the National Football League, despite not having played at the highest level.

“In the end, all we need to do is figure out a new approach to convey the same message. And I think that’s what’s so great about guys like Dave (Fipp) and me—that there’s still value,” Johnson remarked. “We have a good mix on this staff, and Coach (Dan) Campbell has always stated that it’s not about having the smartest guys or all former players; it’s just about having the right guys, and it’s worked really well this year.”
