Following his efforts to fill multiple assistant coach roles, such as offensive coordinator, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is now faced with filling a new one.

On Thursday night, rumours started to circulate that famed offensive line coach Bill Callahan was planning to leave the team to move to Tennessee to be with his son, Brian Callahan, who was just named head coach of the Titans. Although many, including the team’s hierarchy in Berea, had anticipated the move, Cleveland nevertheless suffered a significant loss.

Stefanski now has to move quickly to fill the vacuum, and there may be some rivalry for one possible candidate.

Though he has never called plays in his coaching career, the Browns interviewed offensive line coach Andy Dickerson of the Seahawks two weeks ago as part of their hunt for an offensive coordinator. That discussion, though, might have been a prelude to Callahan’s exit as the team conducted due diligence on possible offensive line coach replacements.

Whether the Browns will go after Dickerson for the position now that Callahan’s departure is announced is unknown at this time. If they do, they’re not alone—according to a Thursday night rumour from ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots and first-year head coach Jerrod Mayo are now considering hiring Dickerson as their offensive line coach. This information follows rumours that New England had appointed Alex Van Pelt, a former offensive coordinator for the Browns, to the same role.

Throughout his coaching career, Dickerson has maintained relationships with the Browns and Patriots. As an operations intern, he actually began his career with New England in 2004 and went on to win a Super Bowl with the team that same year. After taking on the same position in 2005, he departed the company and went on to work as a quality control coach with the Jets.

The Tufts University alumnus was elevated from his position as a defensive quality control coach the year before, and he got his first opportunity working with the offensive line with Cleveland in 2010. Before returning to the Jets for a season in 2011, he only played for the Browns for those two seasons. Dickerson’s longest tenure with a single team was as an assistant offensive line coach for the Rams from 2012 to 2020.

Dickerson has worked with the Seahawks for the past three years, spending the last two of those years as the offensive line coach.
