How much did the Houston Astros save, then, by giving Hector Neris a chance to relieve? Or, perhaps more crucially, how much of their Josh Hader transaction was funded in part by allowing Neris to walk?

So how much did theav Houston Astros se by allowing Hector Neris to enter the game as a reliever? Or, maybe more importantly, how much of their Josh Hader deal was made possible by letting Neris go free?

Neris signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs this past weekend. Neris spent two seasons as an Astros player, and he was a part of the team that won the 2022 World Series.

The details of Neris’ contract are now being disclosed by The Athletic. The rumoured part of the agreement was a one-year contract with an option. In 2024, Neris will make $9 million. In 2025, the Cubs will have a $9 million club option.omponent of the agreement. Neris will earn $9 million in 2024. The Cubs own a $9 million club option in 2025.

The Astros should feel pretty good about themselves, given what Neris received and what the Astros awarded Hader ($19 million annually). With just $10 million more than Chicago paid for Neris, they exchanged a reliever about to enter his 35th season for a young closer who might be the finest in the game.

That also doesn’t account for what Stanek and Maton will ultimately obtain.

For the Cubs, the Neris trade is a solid one. It also improves Hader’s deal a little bit, which is why the Astros went all in to acquire him.
