The Tennessee Titans formally confirmed on Wednesday that Brian Callahan, a former offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, will take Mike Vrabel’s place as head coach.

Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk stated in a press release, “We’re thrilled to have Brian as our head coach. This is an exciting time for our franchise.”

“After a careful selection process, Brian was the clear choice to take the helm of our football squad. I would like to express my gratitude to the other candidates who participated in this process and wish them continued success.”

On January 9, Vrabel was let go by the Titans, capping his six-year career. The Titans led by Vrabel finished the regular season 54-45 and the postseason 2-3.

Callahan served as the Bengals offensive coordinator for the previous five seasons and was a candidate for other head coach positions in the NFL. Twice during that time, the Bengals’ offence was in the Top 15 in terms of yards, coming in at No. 8 in 2022 and No. 13 in 2021. The Bengals’ passing attack came in at number five in 2022 and seventh in 2021.

In 2020, the Bengals were ranked No. 29, in 2023, and in 2019 at No. 26. Joe Burrow, the quarterback, suffered injuries in 2020 and 2023 that caused him to lose a lot of time. With wide receiver Tyler Boyd and quarterback Andy Dalton at the helm, the Bengals finished the 2019 season 2-14.

In 2018, Callahan, 39, was the Oakland Raiders’ quarterbacks coach. With the Detroit Lions in 2016 and 2017, he played the same position. From 2010 until 2015, Callahan worked as a coaching and offensive assistant as well as in offensive quality control for the Denver Broncos.

In 2023, the Titans’ record was 6-11, which was the lowest under Vrabel. With the fourth-worst passing game, they boasted the fifth-worst offence in the NFL. They had the sixth-lowest point total as well.

“Brian has a track record of success and a range of experience that has prepared him for this opportunity,” stated Strunk. “Apart from his obvious passion for the game and his depth of knowledge of football, we believe his leadership qualities will make him the perfect addition to our team.
