TUSCALOOSA, Alabama: ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg revealed on Tuesday afternoon that Buffalo head coach Maurice Linguist will be joining the Crimson Tide’s staff as a defensive assistant, adding another member to Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer’s staff.
For three years, Linguist led Buffalo to victory as head coach, going 14–23 in his tenure and earning the Camelia Bowl in his only postseason game in 2022.
Linguist, 39, coached defensive backs for the Dallas Cowboys, Texas A&M, Minnesota, Mississippi State, and other teams before coming to Buffalo. He is anticipated to have a comparable function on DeBoer’s team.
Along with South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack, who is anticipated to serve as Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Linguist is the second head coach who is currently inactive and is anticipated to join Alabama in an assistant capacity.
The SEC connections of linguists will be crucial as DeBoer keeps assembling a team capable of recruiting in the South.
Now that the hiring of Linguist is rumoured to be imminent, DeBoer just needs a few coaches to complete his new staff. He is anticipated to bring with him offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, Washington’s offensive line coach Scott Huff, wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard, and tight ends coach Nick Sheriden.
DeBoer is also anticipated to keep the defensive line coach Freddie Roach, strength coach David Ballou, and running backs coach Robert Gillespie from Alabama’s 2023 staff, which included Nick Saban.
