The New York Times simulator indicates that the Steelers have a 54% probability of qualifying for the playoffs following their 30-20 victory over Seattle. This follows a less-than-perfect week for outcomes unrelated to their own.
Pittsburgh performed admirably in Week 17, but the rest of the league didn’t do much to support them. The Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs by the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over them, but other than that, the rest of the AFC did not go well for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In order to defeat the Bills, the Raiders, the Panthers, the Jaguars, and the Broncos, Pittsburgh needed to face the Patriots.
None of those were the case.
The Steelers’ chances of making the playoffs will be determined by three games going into Week 18. They will need to defeat the Baltimore Ravens and hope that either the Buffalo Bills fall to the Miami Dolphins or the Jaguars lose to the Tennessee Titans.
A victory over the Ravens and a tie between the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans would also guarantee Pittsburgh a place.
