Daikiel Shorts, the new wide receivers coach for Kentucky football, was not present on the sidelines for the Gator Bowl, but it’s possible that his influence has already been seen in Jacksonville. When asked about Shorts the day before the game against Clemson, UK coach Mark Stoops responded, “IKentucky football WR Dane Key broke this freshman receiving record against  Missouri feel a difference in that room already with these players.” “I sense the focus and the attention to detail. They’re become more competitive in the manner they compete. A day later, in the 38-35 defeat to Clemson, Barion Brown put on one of his best games in his two-year tenure in the UK, making Stoops’ evaluation seem prescient.

Brown gained 226 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns at the end of the game. He scored on a kickoff return of 100 yards, a 60-yard reception, and a 22-yard run. It was Brown’s fourth game in 26 games that he had 100 receiving yards in a game. While Brown’s performance was not flawless (he lost a fumble that led to UK’s fourth-quarter breakdown), it was a solid way to cap off a disappointing second season for the Wildcats star. Offensive coordinator Liam Coen remarked, “I thought he was locked in, he was dialled in.” I was pleased with him

Though many expected Brown and fellow sophomore receiver Dane Key to make a significant improvement from their first to their second year in the programme, their physical prowess has always been apparent. Compared to his freshman year, Brown had seven fewer catches and 89 fewer receiving yards at the conclusion of his second campaign. Key improved on his freshman stats with five more catches and 117 more yards in the Gator Bowl, but only marginally, with four receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown. The number of receiving touchdowns that each player had during their rookie campaign was equal.
