In 2004, Ward was selected by the New York Jets in the draft, however he was waived before appearing in a regular season game. After that, he signed with the New York Giants, where he divided running back responsibilities with Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs from 2004 to 2008. Despite being a member of the team that defeated the unbeaten New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, he was unable to participate because of a fractured leg.

After that, he agreed to a four-year contract with the Tampa Bay Bucs, but he was released after just one season. Before leaving the NFL in 2012, he was a player for the Houston Texans for his final two seasons.

With 2,628 running yards on 551 attempts and 12 touchdowns, Ward concluded his NFL career with a high total. In 2008, he had the finest single-season performance of his career with 1,028 running yards on 182 carries and two touchdowns.
