Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline reports that Paul Snyder, a legendary scout and front office executive for the Atlanta Braves, has tragically passed suddenly. Over his 50-year professional baseball career, Snyder, now eighty-eight, was a member of the Braves organisation.

The most well-known aspect of Snyder’s career was his tenure as the team’s scouting director, during which he was instrumental in attracting big names to the squad, including Chipper Jones, Steve Avery, Tom Glavine, and David Justice. In 1990, he took on the position of assistant to John Schuerholz, the new general manager. After Frank Wren succeeded Schuerholz as team president and Snyder as general manager in 2007, Snyder announced his retirement from the Braves.

1935 saw the birth of Snyder in Dallastown, Pennsylvania. In 1958, he signed a contract with the Braves to play first base and outfield. He never made it to the majors as a player and reached his best in Triple A. However, he went on to manage their minor league organisation. We send Snyder’s family our deepest sympathies.

The Atlanta Braves have been among the more active clubs overall, overhauling their bullpen with multiple transactions and adding outfielder Jarred Kelenic in a deal with the Seattle Mariners, even if Major League Baseball’s winter is still going slowly. Though most people wouldn’t know that since the Braves haven’t made the kind of big-name acquisition that the Dodgers have—signing Shohei Ohtani and trading for Tyler Glasnow, for example—that makes headlines.

That doesn’t imply that the Braves had a particularly difficult task to begin with. While having another starter would be advantageous, other than bench filling, the roster is mostly set. GM of the Braves Alex Anthopoulos talked about the offseason .

Aaron Nola, who re-signed with the Phillies, was someone we pursued. In addition, we have contacted clubs and asked about trades. We didn’t need to deal away any of our starting lineup members, and one starter in particular. We had the prospects to go with the deal, which would have been prospect-based, but we decided against it. Of course, in three, four, or five years, we’ll know if it was the proper decision. It’s comparable to the times when prospects like Michael Harris and Spencer Strider were selected to be held, and we’re happy we did. Judging is difficult because you’re attempting to predict what guys will be like. I have chosen to say no thus far.
