The Luton Town and Bournemouth Premier League match on Saturday had to be cancelled due to the sudden collapse of Luton captain Tom Lockyer on the field following a cardiac arrest. After receiving emergency care on the pitch, he was transported to a hospital. While being led from the Vitality Stadium, he was judged stable.
Many people paid tribute to the Hatters captain, including Fabrice Muamba, a former midfielder for Bolton Wanderers and Arsenal who experienced a similar issue in an FA Cup quarterfinal matchup against Tottenham Hotspur in 2012. In the end, it caused him to abruptly leave football.
“Wishing you a speedy recovery, Tom Lockyer,” Muamba wrote on his X account, expressing his support for Lockyer. It’s wonderful to know that you are aware and receptive. Rest well, and may God grant you a speedy recovery. Considering you and your loved ones today.”
Luton gave a new update on their captain’s health on Sunday, saying that they are still awaiting the results of the player’s medical examinations. They also advised everyone to monitor the club’s official website for more updates.
A new date and kickoff time for the revised fixture will be announced soon, according to Daily Mail. Rule L15 of the Premier League states that any game abandoned with the agreement of the match officials will be replayed in full, instead of continuing where the previous fixture left off.
For now, Rob Edwards’ team’s next Premier League matchup is on Saturday against Newcastle United.
