Houston transfer WR Matthew Golden visiting Texas on Thursday.
Houston wide receiver Matthew Golden seems to be one of Texas’ main transfer portal targets.
On Tuesday, Golden formally added his name to the transfer portal. Soon after, national reporters began to predict that Texas would be the landing site. Gerry Hamilton of On3 reports that Golden is scheduled to visit Austin on Thursday.
Golden hauled in 76 receptions for 988 yards and 13 touchdowns in his two seasons with Houston. Golden’s ability to return kickoffs is an added benefit for the Longhorns; Texas will lose wide receiver Xavier Worthy to the 2024 NFL draft this offseason.
Golden is presently ranked No. 4 among wide receivers by 247Sports in the transfer portal.

Wednesday night, the SEC schedule—which includes dates—was made public. Fans of Texas are undoubtedly excited for their team’s first season in the Southeastern Conference.
The schedule is as advantageous as they could make it without unfairly disadvantageous other teams in the league. The only team with an easier schedule on the western side of the conference might be Texas A&M, as they get to play Texas at home and avoid both Georgia and Alabama.
Texas will play a good number of elite opponents. Week 2’s Longhorns vs. Michigan Wolverines game is sure to draw one of the season’s largest television audiences. Texas plays back-to-back games against Oklahoma and Georgia by midseason.
Let’s examine some key conclusions from what appears to be a reasonable first SEC schedule.
With a 10-2 record, Texas can most likely qualify for the 12-team expanded College Football Playoff. With an 11-1 regular season record, it qualified for a four-team playoff. The Longhorns are playing Georgia and Michigan, two teams that are always in the running for the playoffs, voluntarily rather than under duress. To compete in major conferences, the Longhorns decided to join the SEC. They also have to contend with an Oklahoma team that should be formidable. Later in November, they travel to take on Texas A&M and Arkansas, two fierce rivals.
Texas’s three remaining games—the road trip to Michigan, Oklahoma in Dallas, and Georgia in Austin—could rank among the team’s top five matchups. Unless either team has a humiliating playoff loss or suffers a significant portal loss, Texas and Michigan should begin the season ranked in the top five. Oklahoma’s first five games are favorable enough that a 5-0 record could accompany them into the Cotton Bowl. And Georgia may just keep being the Georgia team that the previous three seasons have taught us to expect.
