Powerhouse Kurt Capewell of the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Origin is headed to Auckland after being signed by the Warriors with one year remaining on his deal.

To strengthen their group for the upcoming NRL season, the Warriors announced on Thursday that they had signed the 30-year-old. He will sign a three-year contract with them right away.


The 189-cm, 100-kg forward has played 139 NRL games for the Broncos, Penrith, and Cronulla since making his NRL debut in 2016.

The Broncos announced on social media that they had released Capewell from the remaining portion of his contract and thanked him for his two years of service to the team.

The Warriors will benefit greatly from having a player of Capewell’s caliber. Additionally, since he is a back row player capable of playing 80 minutes per game, Marata Niukore will be able to see more action as a middle forward, which will lessen the load on Addin Fonua-Blake.

Kurt is a player of exceptional caliber and experience, and the Warriors are excited to have him on board right away, according to general manager of recruitment, pathways, and development Andrew McFadden.

“Since we had space in our roster, we put out a long-term offer with the goal of signing Kurt starting in 2024. We appreciate the Broncos’ assistance in enabling him to leave early.

In addition to his abilities as a player, Kurt will be a great asset to the team as a mentor to the young back row players that the club produces.

Capewell, according to Warriors head coach Andrew Webster, will greatly strengthen the team’s roster.

He declared, “Kurt is a winner with amazing work ethic and tremendous passion.”

“I had a great time working with him at Penrith, and I’m confident that he will make a significant contribution to our team and the club as a whole.

Ever since their meeting in Auckland last week, Capewell and his partner have been talking about the logistics of moving to New Zealand.

The team had a quiet sense of optimism that Capewell would consent to play, and happily, both he and his companion felt at ease traveling across the Tasman. Next week, he is anticipated to join the Warriors.

The Warriors had a busy day in terms of hiring, having just moments before announced the re-signings of edge forward Jackson Ford and center Rocco Berry.

Berry, who was selected in 2019 from Wellington college St Pats Silverstream’s first XV, had a breakthrough 2023 season as the Warriors’ right center.
