The Miami RedHawks’ placekicker, who finished the season 26 for 27 on field goals and only missed one extra point, was named the 2023 Lou Groza Award winner for best placekicker in college football.

In addition, Nicholson was named the MAC special teams player of the year and a member of USA Today’s First Team All-American.

And the junior league season is still ongoing! The RedHawks play Appalachian State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 16 in the Cure Bowl.

, set a record for the most field goals in a perfect regular season by finishing the regular season 23 for 23. The record was bettered by Chicago Bears kicker Cairo Santos, a previous Lou Groza Award winner.

Nicholson’s regular season total includes three field goals: one from 52 yards out during the RedHawks’ 27-0 rout of Bowling Green; one from 48 yards out in Miami’s loss to Miami (FL); and one from 20 yards out in Miami’s overtime victory over Cincinnati.

As Miami won the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship Game 23–14, Nicholson also tied the FBS record for the longest streak in a single season with two field goals. His 26 field goals overall tie for second place in FBS history.

Not only is Nicholson the first in program history to win a national award, but he’s also the first player in MAC history to win the Lou Groza Award.
