This offseason, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have been actively searching the transfer portal for a new quarterback. As a result, Georgia Tech first-year transfer Jeff Sims has made his way onto the portal. Sims only saw meaningful playing time in three Nebraska games this season as a result of a high turnover rate and injuries. Even though Sims only attempted 47 passes this season, he still had a 12.7% interception rate with six interceptions.
This year, Sims struggled to hold onto the football as well; of the 28 drives he led, 39% ended in a turnover in which he was involved. Sims’ four turnovers derailed the Cornhuskers’ excellent first-half performance against Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes in one of the most eagerly awaited games of the season.
Former Ohio State Buckeye quarterback Kyle McCord is being targeted by the Nebraska Cornhuskers as a possible starting quarterback for the 2024 campaign. According to 247 Sports, offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield flew to see the former quarterback. According to reports, Satterfield recently visited with Blake Shapen, a former quarterback for the Baylor Bears.
This year’s historically poor performance by Nebraska’s quarterback room will welcome a new quarterback to Cornhusker nation. Despite criticism from Buckeye supporters, McCord’s 24 passing touchdowns this season would set a school record for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
For Satterfield and head coach Matt Rhule, finding a quarterback via the transfer portal is crucial because the staff utterly failed on their first try. Prior to this season, Rhule made a lot of noise about former Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims, but his tendency toward turnovers kept him from being a successful quarterback for the Huskers. Due to injuries and subpar play, Sims led just 28 drives for the Cornhuskers this season, and he was accountable for 39% of those drives’ turnovers.
If the new Cornhusker coaching staff is unable to find a quarterback this year, their ability to assess talent at the position will be called into question. Last year, they failed to make a bowl game for the first time since 2016 because of poor quarterback play after starting out 5-3. Despite Sims’ propensity for turnover at Georgia Tech, Satterfield was praising the player in a preseason piece published in USA Today’s Cornhusker Wire.
