Chief executive Cameron George of the Warriors has stated that his team is unsure if they will sign veteran Kurt Capewell of the Broncos for the 2024 campaign.
The 30-year-old’s contract with Brisbane only has one season left, and it is said that he has been told he won’t be extended past 2024.
The Warriors have allegedly proposed a three-year contract to Capewell, but George has stated he is “not confident” he can stay with the team until 2024. The Warriors have been pressuring Capewell to be released immediately.
We’ve definitely expressed our interest, but it’s up to him where he is with his longer-term future and whether he and his Brisbane want to look at those, George said on SEN.
“He still has a year left with the Broncos, and they need to talk about it.”
“If he wants to come and talk to us about this year we’re certainly willing to but we respect the fact that he has a contract with Brisbane.”
He also revealed that the Warriors’ offer was still on the cards for the 2025 season and beyond amid emerging frustrations at Red Hill.
“We’ve (offered) a longer-term option here for him, he’s on the market for 2025 and that’s what we’re looking at,” George said.
“If that was to eventuate and him and Brisbane decided that there an option for this year for us to talk about, we’d be happy to do that.
According to WWOS, a number of senior players were upset by Capewell’s early departure because they felt the former Panther was crucial to their 2023 championship run.
The team led by superstar halfback Nathan Cleary came agonizingly close to winning the trophy before Cleary’s masterful performance in the second half.
Senior officials reportedly think that his experience and level-headedness were major factors in the Broncos’ success.
They were therefore taken aback that influential club members were even thinking of letting him go for the 2024 campaign.
