James Greenwood, a veteran who agreed to a one-year contract, has joined the Barrow Raiders for the 2024 campaign, making them another headline addition.

For Barrow, who signed former Wigan Warriors player Ramon Silva yesterday, it is their second Super League acquisition in as many days. The Cumbrian team appears to be assembling a formidable pack for the forthcoming season.

The addition of the 32-year-old Greenwood to the 22-year-old Silva marks another blending of youth and experience as both men sign one-year contracts.

Similar to Silva’s departure from Wigan at the end of the 2023 season, Greenwood also left Salford, demonstrating Barrow’s frugal hiring practises when it comes to Super League players who have been released.

Greenwood, a forward who spent four years with the Red Devils, including a loan spell with Barrow, was signed by the team, which was announced on their website.

In addition, he had played for Hull Kingston Rovers and Wigan Warriors for two years, the most of which he spent on loan.

James Greenwood, a former Salford Red Devils forward, has signed with the Barrow Raiders on a 12-month contract ahead of the 2024 Betfred Championship season, the team announced.

“After the 2023 season ended, Greenwood’s four-year tenure with the Red Devils came to an end. He made 25 appearances and scored six tries overall.

“During that time, the 32-year-old scored a try in the team’s 17-16 loss to Leeds Rhinos at Wembley, helping the club advance to the 2020 Betfred Challenge Cup final.”

After signing a short-term loan agreement, he made his Raiders debut against York RLFC Knights back in February.

“Greenwood played for Hull KR prior to joining Salford, amassing 93 appearances for the Robins in five seasons.”

“We are pleased to announce that James Greenwood has agreed to join us for the coming season,” Barrow Raiders head coach Paul Crarey said. “After lots of hard work behind the scenes to ensure we get the right fit for the club when signing players,” Crarey said.

James can play middle or second row with ease. He believes he could still be playing at the Super League level after talking with him.

“We are excited to see him in Raiders colors, and he is looking forward to proving this while playing for Barrow.”

“James is a proven competitor at the Super League level and will add a new dimension to our forward pack ahead of next season,” rugby director Andy Gaffney stated.
