Every year, the MLB Winter Meetings spark a rush of activity throughout the league. When top team executives meet with players and their agents for four days of wheeling and dealing, there’s no shortage of excitement—from small transactions to big franchise-altering deals.
It’s difficult to predict what the Phillies front office will do during the Winter Meetings this year. General manager Sam Fuld and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski ought to be in Nashville a lot because the team needs help in a few areas. They are not likely to make a franchise-changing decision this time. However, you never know.
Over the years, the Philadelphia Phillies have attended a good number of important Winter Meetings; however, not every deal is finalized at the December gathering. Occasionally, nothing more than the foundation is set for upcoming acquisitions and trades.
At the Winter Meetings, the Phillies worked on some significant deals that were later completed. Consider the well-known 2009 Roy Halladay trade, where the agreement was reached with the Toronto Blue Jays approximately a week following the conclusion of the Winter Meetings. And then there was Bryce Harper’s free agent signing in February 2019, which had its beginnings the December before when the Phillies became one of the front-runners in the Harper competition.
