Chicago Bears keeping an eye  a possible opeout forIn addition to figuring out if Justin Fields is the team’s quarterback, the Chicago Bears are also trying to decide if head coach Matt Eberflus will return for a third season in the final month of the regular season.

After the Bears’ dismal 0–4 start to the season, it appeared inevitable that the coach would be let go, but with the team winning 4–4 of their last 8 games, there is growing conjecture that the team might decide to retain Eberflus for an additional season.

However, the latest development would seem to suggest that the Bears may be preparing their search for a new head coach. The Athletic’s Diana Russini was a guest on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, and while speaking about the University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, Russini reported that the team has already had an internal discussion regarding a potential hire of Harbaugh.

Chicago Bears keeping an eye  a possible opeout forIt’s interesting how timely Russini’s report is. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer revealed last week that he had heard Bears team president Kevin Warren wants to be more involved in the football operations of the team even after he has his preferred candidates in place. Although Warren and Harbaugh had a tense relationship in the past when Warren was the Big 10 commissioner, Warren has had close collaborations with Harbaugh in the past.

Chicago Bears keeping an eye  a possible opeout forThe stars have finally aligned for Harbaugh to lead the Bears as head coach. The timing of Harbaugh’s extensions with the University of Michigan and the Bears having a coach in place never coincided, despite years of rumors that he would accept the head coaching position with the team if it became available.

That might alter in January in the event that the Bears fire Eberflus amid rumors that Harbaugh is considering a comeback to the league.
