The Patriots benched Mac Jones at halftime of Sunday’s 10-7 loss to the Giants and many saw it as a long overdue move given how poorly the offense has played during the team’s 2-9 star.

As the team’s starting quarterback, Jones has predictably drawn the most criticism for what’s gone wrong but the team’s top offensive assistant coach doesn’t think that’s right. Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien

“This year hasn’t been the best for him,” O’Brien said, according to Michael Hurley of WBZ. “I don’t believe he is the main culprit. You can point the finger at me if you want to. It’s not going well; I’m the one who designs it.”

Bill Belichick bears the primary responsibility for the current state of affairs in New England, even though O’Brien and Jones are the ones calling the plays and carrying them out. When it comes to trying to clean up the mess that is their current state, he is the only person who can be considered both the head coach and the de facto general manager because he has held these roles for decades.

Despite being a possible co-owner of the team and knowing Josh McDaniels from their shared time in New England, Tom Brady remained silent following the Raiders’ firing of the coach.
