Shaquille Leonard, a linebacker for the Colts, stayed behind to distribute turkeys before Thanksgiving even though he was cut on Tuesday.
Three-time All-Pro Leonard was unexpectedly cut by the Colts in his sixth season as his playing time was decreasing.
However, the 28-year-old quickly moved past the bad news as he assisted neighborhood families in preparing their holiday meals.
TMZ claims that Leonard’s good deeds affected about 200 families.
Even though he looked happy at the time, he admitted that he was completely taken aback by his release.
Leonard reportedly remarked, “It was the biggest surprise ever,” as reported by Fox 59.
‘I honestly thought if I wasn’t going to [start], I was going to be a backup,’ he continued, speaking of his evolving role on the team. I never imagined that my day off would end with me being fired.
Nevertheless, Leonard appeared to feel better after helping many families have a better Thanksgiving and taking pictures with fans.
“I was devastated to learn about his release today, but even just witnessing the joy on [fans’] faces makes me happy.”
After being freed, he released a statement in which he thanked Indianapolis for welcoming him and his family. The last six years have been nothing short of amazing! You all stood by my side through the good times and the bad. I regret not returning that (the Lombardi trophy) to the 317.
In the second round of the 2018 draft, the team chose Leonard.
‘Shaq is the ultimate competitor and has been a fan favorite since he arrived as a rookie in 2018,’ General Manager Chris Ballard continued. For his contributions to the team and the city of Indianapolis during the previous six seasons, we are immensely appreciative. He will always be a valued member of the Horseshoe, and we wish him the best.
