Because of his tenure with the program, former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy is adored by supporters of the university. That might alter, though, after he provided an analysis of why his former team shouldn’t advance to the College Football Playoff, especially after losing to the Texas Longhorns.

Throughout the final stretch of the season, Alabama has looked fantastic. However, their lone season loss to Texas, a rival CFP team, might pose a significant obstacle to their postseason goals.

McElroy, now a college football analyst at ESPN, spoke about Alabama’s chances of earning a College Football Playoff spot, detailing that he believes Texas should earn a spot over Alabama due to their head-to-head victory.

McElroy claimed that “Texas beat Alabama,” citing Mike Rodak, an Alabama beat writer. “The outcomes must be significant. The outcomes must be respected. The college football community would be harmed if the committee set a precedent by selecting Alabama over Texas. It would. You have to respect the regular season, and placing Alabama ahead of Texas would imply that it is unimportant. You don’t want to establish that kind of precedent.

Obviously, McElroy has to be impartial as an analyst now. But some Alabama fans certainly weren’t thrilled with his take on Alabama’s CFP chances.

The head-to-head loss for Alabama against Texas certainly does loom large when you compare the two teams. However, Alabama will have one remaining chance to make a huge statement to get into the College Football Playoff that some would argue Texas simply cannot match.

Alabama is slated to face off against Georgia in the SEC Championship game. If they go on to defeat them in that game, most fans, perhaps even McElroy, would be hard-pressed not to have them in the College Football Playoff, even over a team like Texas.
