Robert Saleh, the head coach of the New York Jets, left the door open to replacing Zach Wilson as quarterback during the team’s Sunday loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Wilson finished just seven of 15 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown with an interception as the Jets lost 32–6 in Buffalo. It was another miserable evening for Wilson.

Remarkably, the one-time No. 2 draft pick did not complete a single pass to a wide receiver during the game before being benched late in the third quarter in favor of Tim Boyle, a seasoned player.

When Wilson was elevated to starting quarterback following Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles tendon tear in the rematch with the Bills back in September, Saleh has frequently jumped to Wilson’s defense.

However, in the wake of his most recent appalling performance on Sunday, the Jets coach declined to say if he will continue to start.

Wilson’s status as the starting quarterback in New York may depend on Saleh’s team decisions in their final seven regular-season games, given that he was benched twice in the previous campaign.

He acknowledged on Sunday that “we need to take accountability, and that starts with me – and I’m not getting it done.”

But in true Saleh fashion, he also offered his support for the faltering quarterback and reiterated that the team’s issues are much more systemic.

“It’s not just him, like I told Zach on the sideline,” he continued. Although it’s simple to blame the quarterback, it’s also quite evident. You’ve made mistakes with dropped balls, missed routes, and missed protections.

‘Now, he needs to heal, of course. There were several options open to him.
