To the great dismay of the Bengals fan base, who felt that the season was finally picking up steam following a challenging 1-3 start, franchise quarterback Joe Burrow was declared out for the entire campaign due to a sprained wrist. And it appears that we now know the answer to the question of who will assume control in Burrow’s absence, after a little over a day of speculation.
The quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals for the rest of the season is Jake Browning, formerly of the University of Washington. Having come from the offensive scheme known as “Air Raid” under Mike Leach (RIP), he occasionally demonstrated his ability to distribute the ball well, going 8/14 for 68 yards and a touchdown with an effective quarterback rating of 83.8.
But there’s no denying that the Bengals are no longer a real threat in the fiercely competitive AFC North without Joe Burrow. With a 5-5 record, they are currently last in the division and will be up against fierce competition from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, two Super Bowl contenders.
Nevertheless, after Deshaun Watson’s shoulder required season-ending surgery following Week 10, this has been a very sad week for the AFC North, as two franchise quarterbacks have been ruled out for the entire season in the span of five days.
The Cincinnati Bengals can definitely continue to be competitive, but this afternoon it seems like they have much less hope of making it to the playoffs and, eventually, winning that elusive first Super Bowl.
