Following a rumor that the head coach of the Detroit Lions is not interested in taking over as Texas A&M’s next head coach on Thursday, Campbell officially stated as much on Friday.

In a statement to the media on Friday, Campbell stated that he would be happy to assist his former school in any way possible, with the exception of coaching them.

After it was reported on Thursday that the head coach of the Detroit Lions is not interested in becoming the next head coach of Texas A&M, Campbell formally declared as much on Friday.

With the exception of coaching them, Campbell said he would be pleased to help his old school in any way he could in a statement he gave to the media on Friday.

Why Campbell’s name started to be associated with the Aggies makes perfect sense. In addition to being a graduate of the institution, he is among the NFL’s top-up-and-coming coaches. When it comes to its football program, Texas A&M has large resources, so it never hurts to reach out to a well-known figure.

It also makes sense why Campbell would not consider accepting that position.

Even if there is an absurd amount of money involved, no successful NFL coach, or any NFL coach at all, will voluntarily accept what would be viewed as a demotion within the profession.

There are only 32 head coaching positions in the NFL, which are the most sought-after positions in football and are filled rarely.

Only those coaches who have experience in the NCAA and are more qualified for that position will move from the NFL to the NCAA.

Even though managing a major college football program and dealing with boosters, recruiting, NCAA rules, and other related issues makes being a head coach in the NFL far more appealing. There are always strong denials when well-known NFL coaches are questioned about such rumors (see, for example, Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who spoke out against USC rumors a few years back).

Since the beginning of the 2021 season, Campbell has guided the Lions, amassing a 19-23-1 record. But the Lions are 16-10 in the last two years and 15-4 in the previous 19 games going all the way back to Week 9 of the 2022 campaign. They are among the NFL’s teams with the quickest rate of improvement and are beginning to appear like real Super Bowl contenders.
