Building a team happens in the offseason, and Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall has a clear objective this offseason: assemble a team capable of contending for a postseason berth in 2024.

Joey Votto’s $25 million salary is no longer an excuse, according to the books. As of this winter, the Reds had just two players signed for the upcoming season: Luke Maile and Hunter Greene.

Though the Reds can certainly look to add players through free agency, Krall seems to be best at making trades, so this might be the best route for Cincinnati to develop a competitive team in 2024.

Opposing general managers will undoubtedly be in silent awe of the Reds’ extensive farm system as they try to swing a deal for a young player. Which MLB team’s trade candidate would the Reds want to consider?

Though it seems unlikely, maybe Baltimore can part ways with the switch-hitting power bat because of Colton Cowser in the O’s farm system. After 2024, Anthony Santander will be a free agent and due a sizable rise through arbitration.
Team Tampa Bay Rays: RHP Tyler Glasnow
Securing an elite player such as Tyler Glasnow to serve as the team’s Opening Day starter would undoubtedly fulfil the Reds’ desire to aim high. In 2024, Glasnow will have a $25 million debt and become a free agent in the offseason that follows.Jays of Toronto: Yusei Kikuchi, LHP
The Blue Jays have an abundance of starting pitchers, and they might be open to trading some of them for a reliable bat. Whit Merrifield and Matt Chapman are expected to leave Toronto in the winter due to free agency. In 2023, Kikuchi had an ERA of 3.86.
Jonathan Loáisiga, RHP, New York Yankees

By the end of the previous season, the Reds relief corps was completely exhausted, and the front office will undoubtedly look to add some significant pieces this offseason. Despite missing the majority of the previous season due to the removal of a bone spur from his elbow, Jonathan Loáisiga is a reliable reliever.
