This week, the Dallas Cowboys unexpectedly added former Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant to their receiving group.

After his final stint with the Raiders in 2018—before they ever relocated to Las Vegas—Bryant has not participated in an NFL game. The gifted wide receiver was suspended for breaking the NFL’s drug policy, which made it impossible for him to play every day. He was sidelined for the entire 2016 season, the first four games of 2015, and the end of the 2018 season due to an indefinite suspension.

Even so, after the former Clemson receiver was reinstated, Jerry and Stephen Jones were unable to ignore Bryant’s size and talent.

The main thing, in Stephen Jones’ opinion, is that he brings a certain body type (6-4, 215), size, speed, length, and nine yards, which we just don’t have in our receiving corps. “We were watching him practice on Thursday, and he’s just a head taller than the rest of the crew. Nothing against the guys we got here.” His lineage is impressive. It is evident that he was a good player in this league in the past. We simply felt that it was a wise use of a spot on the practice squad. The season is lengthy. The trajectory of the injury bug is unpredictable. Although I adore our receiving team, he has a body type that is simply not present in our group.

Before returning to football in 2021, Martavis Bryant took a few years off. Since then, he’s participated in the XFL, Indoor Football League, and Canadian Football League. Now, he unexpectedly rejoins the Cowboys in the NFL. In addition to Michael Gallup (6-1, 198), Brandin Cooks (5-10, 183), and CeeDee Lamb (6-2, 200), he adds bulk to the receiving core.

This Sunday, the Cowboys and Bryant play the New York Giants.
