John Mozeliak, the president of baseball operations for the Cardinals, announced that the team will add three starters this offseason. As a result, St. Louis will be highly active in the pitching market this winter.
A very talented class of hurlers will be led by names like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Aaron Nola, and even Jordan Montgomery, a former acquaintance. However, none of the three additions will come from the top of the market, so St. Louis will have a large pool of potential targets.
A former first-round choice of the Cardinals who had a rough spell in the middle of his career but has now turned things around was one of those possible targets.
Dennis Lin of The Athletic stated on Saturday that “the (San Diego) Padres declined their two-year, $32 million club option on Michael Wacha.” “He’s now expected to go to free agency.”
After seemingly starting again with the Boston Red Sox in 2022, Wacha has been a top-tier pitcher for the past two seasons.
