It was an unexpected move, as Doherty was regarded as a premier wing-back. Additionally, Wolves had abandoned the lineup he excelled in.

However, the board was dead set on signing the player Julen Lopetegui truly wanted to bring in.

The £50,000-per-week player Doherty has made just seven appearances thus far. Two of those came in the Carabao Cup, and three of them have been starts.

Fortunately for Doherty, Wolves have recently resumed using the wing-backs system, so going forward, he’ll be a vital member of the squad.

The international player for the Republic of Ireland is delighted to be back at Molineux.

However, the 31-year-old admits that at first, he had some reservations about returning. He said to Ian Abrahams of talkSPORT (as reported by a Wolves official): “At first, you’re a little hesitant to revisit my past actions, you know? I was a little concerned that I might undo my previous work, that the second spell wouldn’t work out, and other such concerns.

“But in the end, it was kind of a no-brainer once you get over that.”
