The song goes, “If the Reds should play in Rome or Mandalay, we’ll be there.” And vacations to Europe offer the glitz and occasionally the heat, but an authentic English setting like this? There is charm to the occasion.

Shola Shoretire’s early goal kept the crowd cheering, and before long, Twelve Cantonas was being aired for the first time this winter. Certainly an earlier performance than I can recall on October 31st!

However, as one Red noted, the winter World Cup prevented fans from singing it before Christmas last year, so we’re making up for lost time now.

The topics of a variety of vintage chants included Vidic, Charlton, O’Shea, Rooney, Martinez, Park, Van Persie, Forlan, Busby, Best, Vieira, and a long list of other people.

It’s more difficult than ever to secure tickets to every United game, whether it’s at home or away, due to the increased demand for English football tickets. Time-served Reds had the chance to catch up in a laid-back setting while experiencing the excitement of a raw, vintage-style contest.

The players for United added to the excitement. After the break, we were able to regain the lead thanks to two quick goals from Shoretire and a wonderful finish through bodies. With a smile on their faces, fists pounding, the young Reds charged towards the fans, taking everything in. The coaching staff, the players, and the spectators all adore these games.

Ultimately, Salford’s two late penalties doomed United to lose. Even after losing twice, the U21s didn’t give up and pushed hard in the closing moments. In reply, the cacophony continued long after the last whistle, until the kids finally made their way to the changing rooms for a debrief. They’ll be well-informed.

“Our Wembley dream is over,” a supporter exclaimed.

Let’s see what teams led by Erik ten Hag and Marc Skinner can do this year, but in this competition, the Wembley dream is definitely ended.

For everyone involved, it’s been an amazing experience once again, and the wise old lyrics still hold true today.

“You have to get to that football field when they’re playing in your town.”
