Zac Lomax, a star centre for the St George Illawarra Dragons, has revealed the unexpected that he would like to play five-eighth in the future.
The Dragons center said that he “loves” playing five-eighth and that he would return for preseason camp with the rest of his teammates rather than using the extra time he is entitled to. He made these revelations on The Bye Round Podcast with James Graham.
“I adore five-eighth,” declared Lomax.
If I could play anywhere, it would be five-eighths, ideally. I would really want to play there. My favorite position is the one.
There are several choices. Kyle Flanagan has clearly entered at this point. Jack Bird has performed on No. 6 quite a bit.
We won’t be too short because we have some possibilities at No. 6. Ben Hunt is ranked No. 7, so he’s not a bad half to partner with, but whoever is positioned there will perform well for us.
Lomax may achieve his goals if the Dragons’ preseason training goes as planned.
After Jayden Sullivan was released to the Wests Tigers at the end of the 2023 season and Talatau Amone was unlikely to be available, utility Jack Bird and Kyle Flanagan—who had been in and out of the Bulldogs’ lineup recently—will be the only known options to play at six for the new coach Shane Flanagan.
Nevertheless, it has been reported that Lomax will probably have a chance to play fullback in 2024.
After a turbulent 2023 campaign, Flanagan has stated that he thinks that will turn into the star center’s best position. At one point, Lomax was dropped from first grade after switching teams with Moses Suli under former coach Anthony Griffin.
Ryan Carr helped him turn things around, and it now seems like he and Tyrell Sloan will be vying for the fullback position. Tyrell Sloan struggled to make the Dragons’ starting lineup in 2023 despite having a lot of potential, which was most evident in the game against the Sydney Roosters on Anzac Day.
Although Lomax stated he has discussed 2024 with Flanagan, he is also willing to play wherever the coach asks him to.
“Wherever Flanno desires that I go
