When the 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals square off on the field on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, there will be no lack of star power.

Before this thrilling game, Cincinnati is making sure to take into account 49ers All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, whose strong start has solidified his spot in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Year.

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow explained what makes Warner stand out from other players at his position and why he is such a dynamic athlete.

Burrow told reporters on Wednesday, “Man, he’s fast.” He has excellent ball skills in zone coverage, so you need to be mindful of that at all times. He makes tremendous plays and flies about. You have to always be on the lookout for him because it seems like he’s always around the ball, getting tips, and making big plays for their defense that not many linebackers can make. You can be certain that he will make plays. All you can do is go on to the next one.”

Zac Taylor, the head coach of the Bengals, has a long history with Warner, having worked with him as a member of the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Rams during the 49ers’ breakthrough season in 2018.

Taylor explained how Warner’s familiarity with San Francisco’s scheme has enabled the All-Pro to get better every season and legitimately be recognized as one of the league’s most influential defenders.

“What a fantastic player,” Taylor remarked. “He’s a fantastic athlete. I don’t want to put him in the same category as other guys, yet he excels in their defense. He plays with intensity and intelligence, making an influence on every play he is in. Once more, one of the best backers available. It is beyond a doubt.

“Instinct, faith in the plan, and faith in the task assigned to him. That is the schemer’s experience. They have made adjustments over time, but for the most part, he has been involved in the plan and has witnessed its development. He’s performing at a really good caliber. Throughout my entire tenure with the Rams and here, I’ve just watched him play, and he’s always been a fantastic player who gets better every year.”

Over the past several seasons, Warner—who was selected by the 49ers in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft—has developed into the head of one of the league’s most renowned defenses.

Warner and the 49ers’ defense hope to get back to their winning ways against the formidable Bengals offense after an unexpected display against the Minnesota Vikings last week.
