Washington Commanders: The Washington Commanders Designated Former 2nd Round Pick For Return from the Injured Reserve.

Phidarian Mathis, a defensive tackle with the Washington Commanders, was activated from the injured list. Prior to being added to the active roster, he will have a 21-day window to practice with the squad. Mathis’s calf ailment kept him out of the first six games.

Phidarian Mathis, a four-star prospect, chose Alabama over LSU and TCU for the 2017 season. During his rookie season, Mathis was redshirted. Mathis’s redshirt freshman season saw him become more involved. He totaled 18 tackles while playing on the defensive line. Mathis was selected to the All-SEC Freshman team.

In his second year, Mathis made two starts. In addition to one forced fumble, he has 27 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss. Rather of entering the draft, Mathis decided to return for his junior season.

Mathis’s junior season saw an increase in his numbers. In addition to having 1.5 sacks, three pass deflections, one forced fumble, five tackles for loss, and 31 tackles overall. Mathis made the decision to play one more season with Alabama and return for his senior year. He still had unresolved business.

In his final season at Alabama, Mathis became a star, setting career highs in sacks, tackles for loss, and tackles. In addition to one forced fumble, nine sacks, two pass deflections, and 53 tackles, he also produced 10.5 tackles for loss. Mathis was selected by conference coaches for the All-Sec Second Team. Mathis filed to enter the NFL Draft in 2022.

Phidarian Mathis was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 47th overall. The D.C. selected Mathis. They did not re-sign Tim Settle or Matt Ioannidis, thus they needed further depth at the defensive line.
Due to injuries, his first season was cut short. On his third snap of the season, he suffered a knee injury. Against

 

in Week 1, he tore his meniscus in the left side. He was placed on injured reserve by Washington, and he did not play again that season.

Prior to training camp, Mathis fully recovered from his meniscus injury. In the first preseason game, he hurt his calf. Mathis began the season on Washington’s injured reserve.

The Commanders are expecting that Mathis, who has been activated, will be a fantastic rotational player for the defensive line. A strong defensive line depth chart facilitates rest and reduces weariness for the starting lineup. One position you don’t play every snap is defensive line.

Alongside Mathis will be Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, Chase Young, and Montez Sweat, a formidable defensive line. Casey Toohill, John Ridgeway III, and James Smith-Williams are the rotational/backup players. If he could receive reps when Daron Payne or Jonathan Allen need a break, that would be advantageous.
