This week, the Ibrox midfielder launched an odd attack on the Record Sport columnist. Cantwell referred to Sutton as a “attention seeker” and claimed the ex-Celtic striker instigated a feud with him to “stay relevant.” But Sutton confesses he was almost at a loss for words when he heard some of the Ibrox star’s comments and was amused by the selfish timing of the outburst just before new manager Philippe Clement walked in.

“Todd Cantwell either doesn’t respect his Rangers teammates or he doesn’t think,” he remarked. Which of these is it? I couldn’t care less, but I’m sure Philippe Clement, who appears to be deserving of respect and has an amazing track record, would like to focus on his football. Cantwell almost had me at a loss for words. Almost. It was difficult for me to believe what I was hearing.

“I honestly have no idea where he’s going with this.” Never is it his fault. He appears to be a victim.

“It’s just another look-at-me episode from a young man who is better known for what he does on Tik Tok than what he does on the pitch.” The annoying part is that, despite having had a mediocre career thus far, he has a low opinion of himself.

“It’s never his fault. I’m not interested in personal feuds, so let’s stick to facts. Cantwell stated that I had referred to him as “amazing” during his time at Norwich. I complimented him throughout his strong run in the Premier League.

“He deserved it; he was playing well at the time, but it didn’t last.” Four Norwich executives did not see enough. Daniel Farke, Dean Smith, Alan Russell, and David Wagner are the caretakers.

“He claimed that Bayern Munich was close to signing him.” That’s fantastic; I nearly invented the television set. However, I did not. Cantwell was loaned to Bournemouth, where Scott Parker didn’t see enough of him.

“That is not just one manager. That makes five. Are we suggesting that all five of them were incorrect?

“He described the request to train with the Under-23s as barbaric.” Who does he believe he is?

“Aaron Ramsdale is dropped by Arsenal and speaks brilliantly about putting his head down, working hard, and battling to reclaim his place.” The thing about almost abandoning the game because he has enough money is as amazing as wondering why I, as a commentator paid to comment on Scottish football, keep bringing up Rangers.

“They and Celtic are the country’s two biggest clubs.” Of course, I make observations about the Rangers and their players. That is now my responsibility.

“I’m not sure what Rangers fans think of all of this.” I’m sure some of their highly regarded and trophy-laden ex-players feel about it, but that’s for them to say.

“Cantwell was signed by Michael Beale after those five managers in England.” He’s been unemployed for nine months. That’s because Rangers failed to deliver in crucial games against Celtic and PSV. Cantwell was a contributor to this.
