Before the deadline, I doubt this will be the only significant running back move. I looked through NFL rosters to identify running backs who seemed like the best possibilities for trades based on club competitiveness, the depth of the running back depth chart, contract situation, and individual performance. Five running backs who may reasonably be traded by their teams are listed below.

The Tennessee Titans (2-4) are in last place in the AFC South as they enter their bye week in Week 7. They look to have a serious quarterback issue, but I’m not writing this Mike Vrabel-led team out just yet. The offence is 26th in scoring, 29th in passing yards, and 31st in passing touchdowns. Prior to suffering an ankle injury in Week 6 that required him to use crutches, veteran Ryan Tannehill was playing some of his worst football (averaging 188 yards a game this season with a 2:6 TD-to-INT ratio). Malik Willis, the backup, is not the solution, and we are still unsure of what Will Levis, a second-round draught choice, can provide.

If the Titans want to salvage their season, they will need to swiftly learn how to play the game’s most crucial position. In the event that they don’t, trading Derrick Henry for extra picks may help kickstart a rebuild. Henry will enter free agency in 2024, but his contract for 2023 is slightly over $16 million, according to Over the Cap.

In his sixth season, the two-time league rushing champion, who currently ranks ninth in the NFL with 425 running yards and an average of 4.3 yards per carry in 2023, still has plenty of gas in the tank. The 29-year-old is a remarkable talent who has the ability to completely alter the nature of an offence. If he remains healthy, he will undoubtedly surpass 1,000 yards for the season. Teams that could be interested in the three-time Pro Bowler? the Atlanta Falcons (which would entail a reunion with former Titans coordinator Arthur Smith), Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Breece Hall was recovering from a knee injury he had sustained in 2022 when the New York Jets signed Dalvin Cook during training camp. Cook was a logical addition for insurance. In Week 1, the ex-Viking ran the ball 13 times for 33 yards and made three catches for 26 yards. However, after that, he almost vanished, finishing the following five games with 26 runs for 76 yards (2.9 yards per carry) and six catches for 20 yards.

Cook has played no more than 10 snaps in each of the Jets’ games since Robert Saleh removed Hall off a pitch count prior to Week 5 — fewer than both Hall (obviously) and Michael Carter. Now that Hall (6.5 yards per rush) is doing well once more, it’s time to end this experiment. The Los Angeles Rams, who signed Royce Freeman to the active roster and Darrell Henderson to the practise squad on Tuesday in the aftermath of injuries to Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers, or Buffalo’s offence would benefit from the four-time Pro Bowler’s offensive skills.
