The Owls defender was forced to leave at the conclusion of last night’s 1-0 loss, forcing Xisco’s side to finish the game with 10 men owing to the fact that they’d already used all of their in-game substitutes.
Famewo has been a regular under the Spanish manager, appearing in all but two games across all competitions, but he may miss Darren Moore’s return to Hillsborough on Saturday due to what may be another injury setback for the Owls manager.
Wednesday saw captain Barry Bannan and Josh Windass sit out again at the Hawthorns, while Momo Diaby is still recovering from an injury sustained on debut, and if Famewo joins the list, the boss will be faced with yet another dilemma.
The 24-year-old appeared to be in a lot of pain in his groyne and was treated for a bit before leaving, but Xisco claimed it was too early to know how bad it was.
“We’ll see what happens right now,” he said to The Star. “I can’t tell you how he’s feeling right now.” We’ll see how he feels tomorrow and whether he’ll be able to play in the next encounter.”
Wednesday visit Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon as they look for their first win of the season, with the defeat to the Baggies cementing this season as their worst ever start to a league campaign.
Sunderland will spend the international break preparing for their visit to Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium, where they will attempt to put their thrashing at the hands of Middlesbrough behind them. The Black Cats anticipate a couple of their injured players to be ready against the Potters, with Pierre Ekwah, Bradley Dack, and Alex Pritchard all nearing health.
They also have two more players nearing health, with Aji Alese and Eliezer Mayenda likely to return to the main squad. However, they suffered a further setback against Boro as defender Niall Huggins hobbled out of the game in the first half, while skipper Corry Evans and fellow midfielder Jay Matete are also out indefinitely.
Mowbray provides an injury update before each game, and ChronicleLive has compiled the most recent information we have on the players that are now in the Academy of Light’s treatment centre.
Huggins was injured in the first half against Boro and hobbled off. Mowbray stated later that he has yet to learn the type or degree of Huggins’ injury, but considering Huggins’ injury record, the Black Cats manager will be concerned.
Pritchard missed Sunderland’s wins against Watford and Middlesbrough due to calf strains, with Mowbray deciding it wasn’t worth risking him against Boro. After the international break, the midfielder is likely to be available for the trip to Stoke.
Ekwah was taken off early in Sunderland’s win against QPR, with Mowbray noting that the midfielder had been suffering with a dead leg for the previous week and had suffered another blow to it at Loftus Road. Ekwah was ruled out of the games against Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday, Watford, and Middlesbrough. Mowbray stated on October 7 that he expects to return to Stoke following the international break.
